Study in the USA — Undergraduate

US colleges admit 'holistically': Class 9–12 grades, SAT/ACT (required again at most top universities), English scores, essays, activities and recommendations. You apply directly or through the Common App, often a full year before you start.

The US has many of the world's top universities and lets you explore before choosing a major. For strong students from lower- or middle-income families, a few universities meet full financial need for international students.

• ✓Need-blind for international students, with full need met (official pages): Harvard, Princeton, Dartmouth, Bowdoin, Brown (from the Class of 2029) and Notre Dame.
• ✓Large aid possible: at MIT, the median net price paid by need-based aid recipients is $10,268 a year, against a total cost of $92,760 (2026-27).
• ✓OPT lets you work for up to 12 months after graduating, plus 24 more months for STEM degrees (STEM OPT).

• •Strong Class 9–12 grades; SAT or ACT required at Harvard, Yale, MIT, Stanford, Dartmouth, Cornell and Penn (Princeton: optional for fall 2027 entry, required from fall 2028).
• •English proficiency (TOEFL / IELTS / Duolingo) as each university sets.
• •F-1 student visa with an I-20 from the university and proof of funds for the first year.

• •A broad first year or two, then your major (you can often change it).
• •Research, internships and co-curricular projects.

1. 1Class 11: shortlist universities, start SAT/ACT prep and build real activities.
2. 2Take the SAT/ACT and an English test by the start of Class 12.
3. 3Apply by the deadlines: early rounds are around 1 November (for example Harvard's Restrictive Early Action); regular rounds are usually early January.
4. 4Submit the financial-aid forms each university asks for (for need-blind schools, aid depends on family income).
5. 5After admission: pay the SEVIS fee, book the visa interview, and prepare documents.

• →Keep grades consistently high from Class 9: US colleges look at all four years.
• →Build one or two deep activities (research, olympiads, a real project, community work), not a long list.
• →Write honest, personal essays; start the summer before Class 12.

• !Very expensive without aid: MIT's total 2026-27 cost of attendance is $92,760 before aid.
• !From 15 September 2026, F-1 admission is for the programme length on your I-20 (maximum 4 years) plus 30 days, instead of open-ended 'duration of status'. Extra time, OPT or a new programme needs an extension or re-entry.
• !Since June 2025, F/M/J visa applicants must set social-media accounts to public for vetting.
• !Work visas after OPT (H-1B) are by lottery, now wage-weighted (from 27 February 2026). A $100,000 fee for some new H-1B petitions (September 2025 proclamation) is being fought in the courts, and a separate fee of about $103,000 has been proposed. Check USCIS before planning.

• •US degrees are highly valued by global and Indian employers, and for top master's and PhD programmes.

• •OPT (12 months) + STEM OPT (24 months) for work experience in the US.
• •Longer-term work depends on employer sponsorship (H-1B) and changing rules.
