How do I solve a calorimetry question that includes ice and warm water?

Work in stages and ask what phases can coexist.

Work in stages and ask what phases can coexist. First calculate energy available as warm water cools toward 0 degree C. Compare it with mL_f needed to melt the ice. If the available energy is smaller, some ice remains and the final temperature is 0 degree C. If all ice melts, subtract the melting energy and use the remainder to warm the combined water above 0 degree C. Never jump directly to one mc Delta T equation across a phase change.

Key point

Check whether the phase change completes before finding the final temperature.

Common mistake

assuming all ice melts without an energy check.

Memory tip

reach the phase temperature, pay latent heat, then move on.
