Why aren't viruses placed in any of the five kingdoms of life?

The five-kingdom system classifies cellular organisms, but a virus isn't a cell at all — it's just nucleic acid (DNA or RNA) wrapped in protein. It has no cytoplasm, ribosomes or metabolism, and it's completely inert outside a host, even able to be crystallised like a chemical. Only inside a living cell can it reproduce, by taking over the host's machinery. Being acellular and non-living outside a host, it falls outside the scheme.
