Why does a vaccinated person respond faster and more strongly when they later meet the real pathogen?

A vaccine exposes the immune system to a harmless form of the antigen, producing not only antibodies but also long-lived memory B and T cells.

A vaccine exposes the immune system to a harmless form of the antigen, producing not only antibodies but also long-lived memory B and T cells. When the real pathogen later arrives, these memory cells recognise it at once and multiply within hours into antibody-producing cells -- the fast, strong secondary response -- clearing the infection before it causes disease. Without prior exposure the first (primary) response is slow.
