Who it is for: Anyone. Students can browse courses and centres without any fee.

ITIs — Industrial Training Institutes (CTS)
Run by Directorate General of Training (DGT), MSDE + State governments
The backbone of Indian vocational training. The Craftsmen Training Scheme (CTS) teaches a trade — electrician, fitter, welder, mechanic, COPA and many more — with a National Trade Certificate at the end.
Who it is for: Mostly after Class 8/10/12 depending on the trade. Government ITIs are very low fee.
- 13,888 ITIs across India (DGT figure).
- About 23.9 lakh ITI trainees currently in training.
- Admission and affiliation now run through the DGT/Skill India portal.
- Free courseware for ITI trades is published on Bharat Skills.

Bharat Skills
Run by DGT, MSDE
A free national repository of ITI trade courseware — syllabus, videos, question banks and NIMI learning material.
Who it is for: Anyone, free. Excellent even if you never join an ITI.

Apprenticeships (NAPS / NATS)
Run by MSDE + NSDC
Earn while you learn. You train inside a real company under a registered contract and receive a monthly stipend.
Who it is for: Many roles need only Class 5, 8, 10 or 12 — a genuine route for students who cannot afford long courses.
- Legally backed by the Apprentices Act, 1961.
- About 1.65 crore candidates registered; ~53.75 lakh apprentices engaged.
- Around 6.98 lakh active vacancies listed at the time of checking.
- Real listings show stipends roughly ₹6,800–₹20,000 per month by role.
- Pradhan Mantri National Apprenticeship Mela (PMNAM) events are held at ITIs.

National Career Service (NCS)
Run by Ministry of Labour & Employment
A free government job portal and career-counselling service, with job fairs and registered employers.
Who it is for: Job seekers of any level; free registration.
- Free to register.
- Feeds job listings into Skill India Digital Hub.

PM Vishwakarma
Run by Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSME)
Support for traditional artisan and craft families — basic training with a stipend, a modern toolkit, collateral-free credit and market linkage.
Who it is for: Eighteen traditional trades: carpenter, blacksmith, goldsmith, potter, mason, tailor, barber, cobbler, boat maker and more.
- Targets 30 lakh registered applicants by 2028 (target already met in Sept 2025).
- Over 24 lakh applicants have completed basic training.
- Over 18 lakh have received a modern toolkit.
- More than ₹5,300 crore of loans sanctioned so far.

NCVET & the NSQF
Run by National Council for Vocational Education and Training
The regulator that decides whether a skill certificate is genuine. The National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF) places every qualification on a comparable level.
Who it is for: Useful to any learner: it is how you check a course is real before paying for it.
- Notified on 5 December 2018; absorbed the earlier NSDA and NCVT.
- Recognises Awarding Bodies and Assessment Agencies.
- Also oversees Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS) community skilling centres.
- Rule of thumb: if a private course is not NSQF-aligned, ask why.

NSDC & Sector Skill Councils
Run by National Skill Development Corporation
Builds training capacity with industry. Sector Skill Councils define what each job role actually requires.
Who it is for: Students choosing a sector — the job-role standards tell you exactly what employers expect.
