What it is

The Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) offers B.Stat (Kolkata) and B.Math through its own admission test. Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI) offers 4-year B.S. (Hons) in Mathematics, Mathematics & CS or Mathematics & Physics. Actuaries, who price risk for insurance and pensions, start with the Institute of Actuaries of India's entrance test, ACET.

Why it matters

Statistics and mathematics power data science, finance, AI and research. These are small, highly regarded programmes that many strong maths students don't know about.

Why choose it — the benefits

  • ✓ISI: no tuition for regular students, plus a ₹5,000 monthly stipend and ₹5,000 yearly grant on good progress (the Statistical Data Science degree charges fees).
  • ✓CMI: a strong base for research, data science and top master's programmes.
  • ✓Actuarial science: a respected, well-paid profession with global recognition.

Who is eligible

  • •ISI: Class 12 with Mathematics and English. INMO awardees have a separate channel.
  • •CMI: Class 12; strong National Olympiad performers are exempt from the entrance exam.
  • •ACET: appeared for or passed Class 12.

What you study

  • •Probability, statistics, analysis, algebra and computing.
  • •Economics and data science options (ISI and CMI).
  • •Actuarial papers: financial maths, risk models and insurance.

How to apply — step by step

  1. 1ISI: apply on the ISI admission portal (test usually in May).
  2. 2CMI: apply in March–April; entrance exam in May.
  3. 3ACET: register online. The December 2026 sitting (exam 5 December) is taken from home on a Windows laptop or desktop with a webcam; fee ₹500.

How to prepare

  • →Go beyond the board syllabus: olympiad-style problems in algebra, combinatorics and number theory.
  • →Solve past ISI and CMI papers (both publish them).
  • →For actuarial science, build strong statistics and Excel skills.

Honest challenges to weigh

  • !Very small intakes and demanding entrance tests.
  • !Actuarial exams take many years and have low pass rates.

Where it leads — jobs in India

  • •Data scientist, quantitative analyst, statistician and researcher.
  • •Actuary at insurers, consultancies and pension funds.
  • •Government statistical services (through the ISS exam) and research institutes.

Opportunities abroad

  • •ISI and CMI graduates are well known to top global PhD programmes.
  • •Actuarial qualifications are respected internationally; ask IAI about exemptions and recognition with overseas actuarial bodies.
