Doctors, Nurses & Engineers: Working Abroad

An Indian degree doesn't automatically let you work as a doctor, nurse or engineer abroad. Each country has a licensing body and exams. Knowing them in advance helps you choose the right college in India (for example, an NBA-accredited engineering programme).

Indian doctors, nurses and engineers are in demand worldwide. Planning early saves years and helps avoid costly mistakes.

• ✓Doctors, USA: ECFMG certification via USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK plus an English communication requirement, then residency.
• ✓Doctors, UK: the GMC's Medical Licensing Assessment framework (PLAB for international graduates).
• ✓Doctors, Australia: AMC standard pathway (a computer-based MCQ exam, then a clinical exam or workplace-based assessment).
• ✓Doctors, Canada: the MCCQE, a 230-question exam at Prometric centres in 70+ countries, needed for residency and the LMCC.
• ✓Nurses, UK: NMC registration with IELTS 7 (6.5 in writing) or OET B (C+ in writing), plus the CBT and OSCE.

• ✓Nurses, Germany: the government 'Triple Win' programme has partnered with Kerala (NORKA Roots) since 2021, and Telangana is also listed. It offers language training and job placement.
• ✓Gulf: health workers are licensed by DHA (Dubai), DOH (Abu Dhabi), MOHAP or SHA, with document verification and a Prometric-type exam.
• ✓Engineers: India has been a permanent Washington Accord signatory since 13 June 2014. Graduates of NBA Tier-I accredited programmes get international academic equivalence (not an automatic licence).

• •A recognised degree from India (MBBS, B.Sc. Nursing, B.Tech).
• •English test scores (IELTS/OET/TOEFL as each body requires).
• •The medical school must be listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools with an ECFMG sponsor note for the US route.
