Why do I keep making silly mistakes, and how do I stop them?
'Silly' mistakes are usually a system problem, not carelessness: rushing, misreading, skipping steps, or exam pressure. Track them in an error log and they drop fast.
Repeated small errors — sign slips, misread 'NOT', wrong unit, calculation trips — are patterns, and patterns can be fixed. Keep an error notebook: for every wrong answer, write the question type and the exact reason you got it wrong. Within weeks you'll see your top 3 recurring traps, and just being aware of them cuts them dramatically. Underline key words in questions (NOT, EXCEPT, incorrect), write units at every step, and don't skip written steps to 'save time' — skipped steps are where silly errors hide. Practising under timed conditions trains accuracy at speed.
Memory tip
You can't fix what you don't track. An error log turns 'silly mistakes' into a solvable checklist.
What to do
- 1Maintain an error notebook: question type + exact reason for each mistake.
- 2Underline keywords like NOT / EXCEPT / incorrect while reading.
- 3Write units and intermediate steps — don't skip to 'save time'.
- 4Review your top recurring error types before every test.
💙 For parents
Try not to say 'be more careful' — it rarely helps and adds pressure. Instead, encourage the error-notebook habit and treat mistakes as data. A child who calmly analyses errors improves; one who fears them tends to repeat them.
