How important are mock tests, and how do I analyse them properly?
Mock tests are half the preparation. Their real value isn't the score — it's the analysis afterward: finding weak concepts, timing leaks and error patterns, then fixing them before the next test.
Mocks build exam stamina, timing and temperament, and reveal exactly where you lose marks. But taking tests without analysing them wastes most of the benefit. After every mock, spend at least as long analysing as you spent taking it: categorise each wrong/blank question as a concept gap, a silly error, or a time issue. Fix concept gaps by re-studying, silly errors via your error log, and time issues by practising question-selection (attempt easy marks first, leave the traps). Track your accuracy and attempt strategy over tests — improvement there matters more than a single day's score.
Memory tip
The score is feedback, not the goal. Real gains come from the analysis after the test.
What to do
- 1Take full-length mocks regularly under real timing.
- 2Analyse each mock as long as you took it — don't just check the score.
- 3Tag every error: concept gap, silly mistake, or timing problem.
- 4Refine your attempt strategy: secure easy marks first, skip traps.
💙 For parents
Please don't react to individual mock scores — they swing a lot and are meant to expose weaknesses early. A low mock now that gets analysed is a gift. Ask 'what did this test teach you?' rather than 'how much did you get?'
