I study a lot but my marks aren't improving — why?
Usually it's how you study, not how much. Passive reading without recall, skipping test analysis, ignoring weak areas, or not practising enough questions all cause a plateau. Change the method, not just the hours.
A plateau despite hard work almost always points to method. Common causes: (1) passive study — re-reading and highlighting instead of active recall and problem-solving; (2) avoiding weak topics and re-studying comfortable ones; (3) taking tests but not analysing mistakes; (4) too little application practice, so you 'understand' but can't solve under time. Fix it by shifting to recall + lots of questions, deliberately attacking your weakest chapters, and analysing every test. Also check basics like sleep and focus. Track a specific metric (accuracy, topic-wise scores) so improvement becomes visible and targeted.
Memory tip
Effort × wrong method = plateau. Effort × recall + weak-area focus = growth.
What to do
- 1Switch from re-reading to active recall + heavy question practice.
- 2Deliberately study your weakest topics, not your favourite ones.
- 3Analyse every test; convert mistakes into an action list.
- 4Track accuracy/topic scores so progress is measurable.
💙 For parents
Hard work that isn't paying off is demoralising — your child may feel they're 'not smart enough', which is usually false. Reassure them it's likely a method issue, and support the switch to active recall, question practice and honest weak-area work. Patience here prevents a loss of confidence.
