BiologyDiversity in Living OrganismseasyWhat is classification, and what is the sequence of the main groups used?
Reveal answer ↓
What it is
Living things are sorted into a hierarchy of groups, from Kingdom down to Species.
Answer
Classification is the arrangement of living organisms into groups and sub-groups on the basis of their similarities and differences. It makes the study of a huge variety of organisms easier and shows the evolutionary relationships between them. The main groups, from the largest to the smallest, are Kingdom, Phylum (called Division in plants), Class, Order, Family, Genus and Species. As we move down this hierarchy the number of organisms in a group decreases while their shared characteristics increase.
- •Groups organisms by similarities and differences
- •Hierarchy: Kingdom -> Phylum -> Class -> Order -> Family -> Genus -> Species
- •Going down: fewer organisms, more shared features
- •Species is the basic unit of classification
Why learn this
Classification makes millions of organisms easy to study and shows how they are related.
💡 Memory trick
King Philip Came Over For Good Soup: Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species.
BiologyDiversity in Living OrganismsmediumWhat is classification? Write the hierarchy of classification in order.
Reveal answer ↓
What it is
Living organisms are classified into groups based on similarities and differences, arranged in a hierarchy of ranks.
Answer
Classification is the arrangement of living organisms into groups and subgroups on the basis of their similarities and differences. This makes their study systematic and easy and shows evolutionary relationships. The hierarchy of classification, from the largest group to the smallest, is: Kingdom, Phylum (or Division in plants), Class, Order, Family, Genus and Species. Species is the basic unit of classification.
- •Grouping by similarities and differences
- •Makes study systematic
- •Kingdom > Phylum > Class > Order > Family > Genus > Species
- •Species is the basic unit
Why learn this
It makes the study of millions of organisms organised and easy.
💡 Memory trick
Hierarchy: Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species (King Philip...).
BiologyDiversity in Living OrganismsmediumName the five kingdoms proposed by Whittaker with one example each.
Reveal answer ↓
What it is
Whittaker classified living organisms into five kingdoms: Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae and Animalia.
Answer
R. H. Whittaker classified organisms into five kingdoms based on cell structure, body organisation and mode of nutrition. They are: Monera, prokaryotic organisms such as bacteria; Protista, unicellular eukaryotes such as Amoeba and Paramecium; Fungi, decomposers such as mushrooms and yeast; Plantae, multicellular autotrophs (plants); and Animalia, multicellular heterotrophs (animals).
- •Monera: prokaryotes (bacteria)
- •Protista: unicellular eukaryotes (Amoeba)
- •Fungi: decomposers (mushroom, yeast)
- •Plantae (plants) and Animalia (animals)
Why learn this
It groups all life by cell type, body organisation and mode of nutrition.
💡 Memory trick
5 kingdoms: Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, Animalia (bacteria to animals).
BiologyDiversity in Living OrganismseasyDifferentiate between invertebrates and vertebrates. Name the classes of vertebrates.
Reveal answer ↓
What it is
Animals without a backbone are invertebrates; animals with a backbone (and a notochord) are vertebrates.
Answer
Invertebrates are animals that do not have a backbone (vertebral column), for example insects, worms and molluscs; they belong to phyla such as Porifera, Coelenterata, Arthropoda and others. Vertebrates are animals that have a backbone and a notochord and belong to the phylum Chordata. The five classes of vertebrates are Pisces (fishes), Amphibia (frogs), Reptilia (snakes, lizards), Aves (birds) and Mammalia (mammals).
- •Invertebrates: no backbone (insects, worms)
- •Vertebrates: have a backbone (phylum Chordata)
- •Classes: Pisces, Amphibia, Reptilia, Aves, Mammalia
- •Mammals feed young on milk
Why learn this
It is the broadest division within the animal kingdom.
💡 Memory trick
Vertebrates have a VERTEBRAL column (backbone); invertebrates do not.
BiologyDiversity in Living OrganismseasyWhat is binomial nomenclature? State its conventions.
Reveal answer ↓
What it is
Binomial nomenclature gives every organism a unique two-part scientific name: genus and species.
Answer
Binomial nomenclature is the system, given by Carolus Linnaeus, of naming each organism with two words: the first is the genus and the second is the species. For example, the scientific name of humans is Homo sapiens. By convention, the genus name begins with a capital letter and the species name with a small letter, and the full name is written in italics (or underlined when handwritten). This gives every organism a unique, universally accepted name.
- •Two-part name: genus + species
- •Given by Linnaeus
- •Genus capital, species small letter
- •Written in italics; example Homo sapiens
Why learn this
It gives one universal name so scientists everywhere mean the same organism.
💡 Memory trick
Binomial = two names: Genus (capital) + species (small), written in italics.
