PhysicsMagnetic Effects of Electric CurrenteasyState the right-hand thumb rule for the magnetic field around a straight current-carrying wire.
Reveal answer ↓
What it is
A current in a straight wire creates circular magnetic field lines around it.
Answer
If you hold the straight conductor in your right hand with the thumb pointing in the direction of the current, the curled fingers show the direction of the concentric circular magnetic field lines around the wire.
- •Thumb -> direction of current
- •Curled fingers -> direction of field
- •Field lines are concentric circles around the wire
Why learn this
It's the principle behind electromagnets, electric motors, bells and MRI machines.
💡 Memory trick
Right hand: thumb = current, curled fingers = the circular magnetic field.
PhysicsMagnetic Effects of Electric CurrentmediumWhat is electromagnetic induction, and how can the induced current be increased?
Reveal answer ↓
What it is
A changing magnetic field around a conductor induces a current in it - the reverse of the motor effect.
Answer
Electromagnetic induction is the production of an electric current in a conductor whenever the magnetic field around it changes, for example by moving a magnet into or out of a coil. The changing field sets up a potential difference that drives a current. Discovered by Faraday, it is the principle behind the electric generator. The induced current can be increased by moving the magnet faster, using a stronger magnet, or increasing the number of turns in the coil.
Induced current grows with a faster change in the magnetic field
- •A changing magnetic field induces a current
- •Discovered by Michael Faraday
- •Principle behind the electric generator
- •Increase it: faster motion, stronger magnet, more turns
Why learn this
Every generator and power station in the world produces electricity by this principle.
💡 Memory trick
Change the field -> get a current. Faster change, stronger magnet, more turns = bigger current.
PhysicsMagnetic Effects of Electric CurrenteasyWhat is a magnetic field? State two properties of magnetic field lines.
Reveal answer ↓
What it is
A magnetic field is the region around a magnet where its force can be felt; field lines show its direction and strength.
Answer
A magnetic field is the region around a magnet or a current-carrying conductor within which its magnetic force can be experienced. Magnetic field lines are used to represent it. Two properties are: the field lines emerge from the north pole and merge into the south pole outside the magnet (forming closed loops), and two field lines never intersect each other, because at a point the field can have only one direction. The field is stronger where the lines are closer together.
- •Region where magnetic force is felt
- •Field lines go N to S outside the magnet
- •Field lines never cross
- •Closer lines mean a stronger field
Why learn this
Field lines let us picture and compare magnetic fields.
💡 Memory trick
Field lines go from N to S outside the magnet; closer lines mean a stronger field.
PhysicsMagnetic Effects of Electric CurrentmediumState the right-hand thumb rule for the magnetic field due to a straight current-carrying conductor.
Reveal answer ↓
What it is
A current-carrying conductor produces a magnetic field around it, whose direction is given by the right-hand thumb rule.
Answer
When an electric current flows through a straight conductor, it produces a magnetic field in the form of concentric circles around the conductor. The direction of this field is given by the right-hand thumb rule (Maxwell's corkscrew rule): if you hold the conductor in your right hand with the thumb pointing in the direction of the current, then the curled fingers show the direction of the magnetic field lines around it.
- •Current produces a circular magnetic field
- •Right-hand thumb rule gives the direction
- •Thumb points along the current
- •Curled fingers show the field direction
Why learn this
It is the basis of electromagnets, motors and many devices.
💡 Memory trick
Right-hand thumb rule: thumb points along the current, curled fingers show the field direction.
PhysicsMagnetic Effects of Electric CurrentmediumState Fleming's left-hand rule and name one device based on it.
Reveal answer ↓
What it is
A current-carrying conductor placed in a magnetic field experiences a force; its direction is given by Fleming's left-hand rule.
Answer
Fleming's left-hand rule states that if the thumb, forefinger and middle finger of the left hand are stretched mutually perpendicular, with the forefinger pointing in the direction of the magnetic field and the middle finger in the direction of the current, then the thumb points in the direction of the force (motion) experienced by the conductor. This rule gives the direction of force on a current-carrying conductor in a magnetic field, and it is the working principle of an electric motor.
- •Force on a current in a magnetic field
- •Fleming's left-hand rule
- •Forefinger: field, middle: current, thumb: force
- •Used in the electric motor
Why learn this
It is the working principle of the electric motor.
💡 Memory trick
Fleming's LEFT hand: Thumb = Force (motion), First finger = Field, seCond finger = Current.
PhysicsMagnetic Effects of Electric CurrenthardWhat is electromagnetic induction? State Fleming's right-hand rule.
Reveal answer ↓
What it is
A changing magnetic field around a coil induces an electric current in it; this is electromagnetic induction.
Answer
Electromagnetic induction is the phenomenon in which a changing magnetic field (for example, by moving a magnet near a coil or changing the current in a nearby coil) induces an electric current in a conductor or coil. Fleming's right-hand rule gives the direction of the induced current: if the thumb, forefinger and middle finger of the right hand are held mutually perpendicular, with the forefinger pointing in the direction of the magnetic field and the thumb in the direction of motion of the conductor, then the middle finger points in the direction of the induced current. It is the principle of the electric generator.
- •Changing magnetic field induces a current
- •Fleming's right-hand rule gives its direction
- •Forefinger: field, thumb: motion, middle: induced current
- •Principle of the electric generator
Why learn this
It is the working principle of the electric generator (dynamo).
💡 Memory trick
Move a magnet near a coil -> induced current. Fleming's RIGHT hand gives its direction.
PhysicsMagnetic Effects of Electric CurrentmediumWhat is the function of a fuse and of the earth wire in a domestic circuit?
Reveal answer ↓
What it is
Household circuits use live, neutral and earth wires, with a fuse and earthing for safety.
Answer
In a domestic circuit, a fuse is a safety device made of a thin wire of low melting point connected in the live wire. If the current becomes too large due to a short circuit or overloading, the fuse wire heats up and melts, breaking the circuit and preventing fire and damage. The earth wire is connected to the metal body of appliances and to the ground; if the live wire touches the metal body, the earth wire provides a low-resistance path for the current to flow safely to the earth, protecting the user from a dangerous electric shock.
- •Live, neutral and earth wires
- •Fuse melts on overload/short circuit
- •Fuse is connected in the live wire
- •Earth wire carries leaked current safely to ground
Why learn this
Fuses and earthing protect us from fires and electric shocks.
💡 Memory trick
Fuse melts on overload; the earth wire sends leaked current safely to the ground.
