Why is the atmosphere important for life on Earth?

Reveal answer ↓

What it is

The atmosphere is Earth's protective blanket of air that supplies gases and steadies temperature.

Answer

The atmosphere is a blanket of air that supports life in several ways: it provides oxygen for breathing and carbon dioxide for photosynthesis, keeps the temperature of the Earth steady by preventing sudden day-to-night changes, and shields us from the Sun's harmful ultraviolet rays through the ozone layer. Winds and the water cycle also depend on it.

  • Provides oxygen and carbon dioxide
  • Keeps temperature steady (day and night)
  • Ozone layer blocks harmful UV rays
  • Drives winds and the water cycle

Why learn this

It gives us oxygen, blocks harmful UV rays (ozone) and drives weather - no atmosphere, no life.

💡 Memory trick

The air blanket does 3 B's: Breathe, Block UV, Balance temperature.

BiologyNatural Resourceseasy

Describe the water cycle.

Reveal answer ↓

What it is

The water cycle is the continuous circulation of water between the land, water bodies, atmosphere and living things.

Answer

The water cycle is the continuous movement of water among the oceans, land, atmosphere and living organisms. Water evaporates from oceans, rivers and lakes, and transpires from plants, forming water vapour. This vapour rises, cools and condenses to form clouds. The water then falls back to the Earth as precipitation (rain, snow or hail), collects in water bodies and on land, and the cycle repeats. The Sun's heat drives the whole process.

  • Water moves between land, sea, air and life
  • Evaporation and transpiration form vapour
  • Condensation forms clouds
  • Precipitation returns water to Earth

Why learn this

It keeps fresh water available and links all life to the environment.

💡 Memory trick

Evaporation -> condensation -> precipitation -> collection, then repeat.

BiologyNatural Resourceshard

Explain the main steps of the nitrogen cycle.

Reveal answer ↓

What it is

The nitrogen cycle circulates nitrogen between the atmosphere, soil and living organisms.

Answer

In the nitrogen cycle, atmospheric nitrogen gas is converted into usable compounds by nitrogen fixation, carried out by bacteria such as Rhizobium (in legume roots) and by lightning. These compounds are turned into nitrates by nitrifying bacteria, which plants absorb to make proteins. Animals get nitrogen by eating plants. When plants and animals die, decomposers break down their remains and return nitrogen to the soil, and denitrifying bacteria convert nitrates back into nitrogen gas, returning it to the atmosphere.

  • Nitrogen fixation: N2 -> nitrogen compounds (Rhizobium, lightning)
  • Nitrification: to nitrates absorbed by plants
  • Decomposition returns nitrogen to soil
  • Denitrification returns N2 to the atmosphere

Why learn this

Nitrogen is needed to make proteins and DNA in all living things.

💡 Memory trick

Fix -> nitrify -> absorb -> decompose -> denitrify, keeping atmospheric N2 steady.

BiologyNatural Resourcesmedium

Describe the carbon cycle and the greenhouse effect.

Reveal answer ↓

What it is

The carbon cycle moves carbon between the air, living things and fuels; too much carbon dioxide enhances the greenhouse effect.

Answer

In the carbon cycle, carbon dioxide from the atmosphere is taken up by green plants during photosynthesis and converted into food (carbon compounds). This carbon passes to animals through food, and is returned to the atmosphere as carbon dioxide through respiration, decomposition and the burning of fuels. The greenhouse effect is the trapping of the Sun's heat by gases such as carbon dioxide in the atmosphere; an increase in these gases due to burning fossil fuels enhances this effect and causes global warming.

  • Photosynthesis removes CO2
  • Respiration, decay and burning release CO2
  • Greenhouse gases trap heat
  • Excess CO2 -> global warming

Why learn this

It explains global warming and why burning fossil fuels is a concern.

💡 Memory trick

Photosynthesis takes CO2 in; respiration and burning give CO2 out. Excess CO2 traps heat.

BiologyNatural Resourceseasy

What is the importance of the ozone layer? What damages it?

Reveal answer ↓

What it is

The ozone layer in the upper atmosphere absorbs the Sun's harmful ultraviolet radiation.

Answer

The ozone layer is a layer of ozone gas (O3) present in the upper atmosphere (stratosphere). It is important because it absorbs most of the harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation coming from the Sun, protecting living organisms from its damaging effects such as skin cancer, cataracts and damage to crops. The ozone layer is damaged by man-made chemicals called chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which were used in refrigerators and aerosol sprays, leading to a thinning called the ozone hole.

  • Ozone (O3) is in the upper atmosphere
  • Absorbs harmful UV radiation
  • Protects against skin cancer and crop damage
  • Damaged by CFCs (ozone hole)

Why learn this

It protects living things from UV rays that cause skin cancer and harm crops.

💡 Memory trick

Ozone (O3) = Earth's 'sunscreen'; CFCs from coolants damage it.
